COURSE OUTLINE

MI English II
April 2018

Instructor: Chris Elvin (chriselvin@gmail.com)

Course Description

The goal of this course is to improve your English listening comprehension, critical thinking, and writing proficiency.

Course Assessment

40% In-class listening exercises
30% Homework portfolio
10% Student prepared listening activity
20% Final listening test
10% Final vocabulary test

In-class listening exercises - 40 points: Every week you will have a listening and writing activity which must be completed by the end of the lesson. You will be asked to watch and listen to a short talk, make notes, and then write a summary and opinion of the speech and answer any additional questions. The total score for all of these tasks will be 40 points.

Homework portfolio - 30 points: You are required to keep a record of listening activities that you do outside of class. These activities should take between 10 and 15 hours of your time per trimester. Your portfolio should be handed in to your teacher during the penultimate lesson so that it can be graded and handed back to you. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Student prepared listening activity - 10 points: Your pair or group should prepare a thirty-minute listening activity for the rest of the class. You may choose anything that you think is appropriate and relevant.

Final listening test - 20 points: This test will be very similar in structure to your weekly assignments (listen, make notes, write a summary and opinion).

Final vocabulary test - 10 points: You should upload one interesting word that you learned recently to the database, and do this seven times (once per week would be ideal). The final test will be a matching pair random quiz based on everyone's uploaded words.
