September 13th lesson

Dear students, Today you will sign up for in pairs or groups of three (seven groups) for your student-led actitvity which will start next week. After that you will do a class listening activity and write a summary and opinion about it. Remember that you are allowed to watch the presentation using English or Japanese subtitles, but you should avoid accessing the transcript. After this activity has finished, you may start your second portfolio. First you will listen to a TED Talk about sustainability. Then you will read an article about it from an article which appeared in The Guardian from the U.K. Goldsmith`s College Bans Beef Then please fill in the form below. Class Listening Exercise This semester you should also do a listen exercise for homework each week like last trimester. Listening Homework Portfolio   Finally, please remember to contribute to the vocabulary database by uploading your word and meaning from today`s class. Vocabulary Upload Form Kind regards,

Copy paste

Dear students, Please paraphrase your answers. This applies to your weekly activities as well as your portfolios. There is no learning if you just copy paste from transcripts or the Internet. Students who did so - even once - got no marks for their portfolio. Kind regards, Chris Elvin PS. Next trimester I would like to ban your access to the TED Talks transcripts - because we are not a reading and writing class. You may listen to the presentations with English or Japanese subtitles to help you process the information in real time, and that will help your learning, but taking a short cut to read the speech won't help you master English lisetning in the long run. For your portfolios, too, it will be wiser to take the slower route to acquire aural English by not reading the transcript.
